Grammar Invasion_Present continuous vs Present simple





THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS IS USED:

1. to describe an action that is going on at this moment: 

You are using the Internet. 
You are studying English grammar.
2. to describe an action that is going on during this period of time or a trend: 

Are you still working for the same company? 
More and more people are becoming vegetarian.
3. to describe an action or event in the future, which has already been planned or prepared: 

We're going on holiday tomorrow. 
I'm meeting my friends tonight. 
Are they visiting you next winter?
4. to describe a temporary event or situation: 

He usually plays the drums, but he's playing bass guitar tonight. 
The weather forecast was good, but it's raining at the moment.

How do we form it? Easy!



Affirmative form:
Subject + verb to be + base form with -ing

I am going to the park.

Negative form:

Subject + verb to be +not + base form with -ing

I am not playing football this week.
I'm not playing football this week.

Interrogative form:

 Verb to be + Subject +base form with -ing

Are you listening to the teacher?

The auxiliary verb (be) is conjugated in the Present Simple: am, are, is

REMEMBER THE CLUE WORDS used with the present continuous:
  • At the moment, 
  • At present, 
  • Currently, 
  • Nowadays, 
  • Now, 
  • Right now, 
  • Still, 
  • This week/year/days/month
